The estranged Jahangir Tareen group has decided “in principle” to support the no-confidence motion submitted by the opposition against Prime Minister Imran Khan in the National Assembly.
The group has also decided to back the opposition’s no-trust move against Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, The News reported on Sunday.
Quoting sources, the newspaper said that the faction has decided to support Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi’s nomination as Punjab chief minister if the opposition supports the PML-Q leader.
Officials said that the faction has eight to 10 MNAs and 22 to 26 MPAs in Punjab, adding that the camp was not interested in supporting Aleem Khan “due to several reasons.”
“When we stood against Usman Buzdar in the past, Aleem avoided joining any side at that time,” explained the sources when asked about why they were opposing the former Punjab minister.
Raja Riaz, who is a member of the Tareen group, when asked about the decision, had earlier confirmed that the faction would support the opposition’s no-confidence motion against the premier.
However, when contacted again, Riaz backtracked from his earlier statement and said that nothing was final so far.
“Jahangir Tareen will take the final decision after coming back to the country,” he said, adding that no final agreement or decision to support Pervaiz Elahi or Aleem Khan had been taken, so far.
