A member of Afghanistan’s negotiating team, Nader Nadery, has said that the Taliban have set conditions for the restoration of peace in the country.
Addressing a press conference in Kabul on Thursday, Nadery, who is head of the Independent Administrative Reforms and Civil Service Commission, said that the Taliban have offered a plan for a three-month ceasefire.
However, they have demanded the release of 7,000 of their prisoners and the removal of their leaders’ names from the United Nations “blacklist”, Nadery added.
He did not appear optimistic about the demand of the Taliban and said “we witnessed that the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners did not help the situation and even escalated the violence.”
Nadery said that in some areas that have fallen to the Taliban, women have lost their jobs due to damage to government buildings and direct and indirect fears or threats from the Taliban.
He said that at least 260 government buildings have been destroyed in the districts that have fallen to the Taliban. Public services have also stopped in those areas, he added.
