Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez struck twice in the last 12 minutes to give Spanish La Liga’s defending Atletico Madrid a 2-1 win at Getafe that took to the top of La Liga for a while.
Getafe took the lead after Atletico’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak made an uncharacteristic mistake as he failed to collect a high ball. Stefan Mitrovic headed the clipped ball and the ball went in via the post and then the Atletico goalie.
The visitors saw more of the ball but failed to make their superiority count. The golden double-chance came but Getafe’s David Soria saved well from Suarez before Carrasco’s effort from the rebound was deflected over. Later in the 68th minute, Suarez headed against the bar. It made matters easier for the defending champions when Getafe’s midfielder Carles Cunha was sent off for an aggressive challenge on Atletico’s substitute Matheus Cunha.
Getafe continued to hold firm as Atletico struggled to create chances against the league’s bottom side. Eventually, the incessant pressure broke the hosts’ resolve as Suarez equalized with a looping header from Mario Hermoso’s 78th-minute cross. Former Barcelona striker then went on to score another header, which proved to be the winner, in the first minute of injury time.
The last-gasp win lifted Atletico above Real Madrid with the Los Blancos yet to play their match in hand against Mallorca. The defeat kept the home side in the relegation zone with six defeats from their first six games of the season.
Atletico coach Diego Simeone rang several changes to the team that drew at home to Athletic Club with Suarez, Hector Herrera, and Yannick Carrasco came back into the starting.
Elsewhere, Radamel Falcao hit a 96th-minute headed winner as Rayo Vallecano sealed a surprise 2-1 win at Athletic Club Bilbao, who had enjoyed an unbeaten start to the league campaign.
In another match, Iago Aspas and Brais Mendez were on the scoresheet for Celta Vigo as they beat Levante 2-0 away from home to record their first win of the season.
