The Sindh Education Department is considering closing schools in the province up to 8th grade due to a steady rise in COVID-19 cases across the country.
This recommendation came forward in a meeting of the department’s steering committee today, where the status of educational institutions amid the third wave of the coronavirus was under discussion.
According to media reports, some members of the steering committee suggested closing schools in Sindh for up to 8th grade, while others recommended that schools be closed for 15 days. Some members opposed the closure of all schools.
Some members of the steering committee suggested that classes should continue to 9th to 12th grade students, media reports said. However, a representative of private schools raised objection against closing schools, asking why schools should be closed when markets are open.
Sindh Education Minister Saeed Ghani said that two different proposals regarding closing schools came about in the meeting which will be presented before the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC). Speaking to a private news channel after the meeting, Ghani said the COVID-19 situation in Sindh was under control.
