LAHORE: An accountability court presided over by Justice Amjad Nazir Chaudhry declared Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif’s daughter Rabia and son-in-law Imran Ali Yousaf absconders in the Punjab Saaf Pani Company case filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

After Rabia Shahbaz and her husband failed to attend the proceedings of the reference against them, the court had ordered the prosecution to initiate the process to declare the duo absconders. In January, the court had issued non-bailable warrants for the arrest of the duo in the Saaf Pani Company case.

NAB alleges that Ali Imran, his wife Rabia and others dented the national exchequer Rs24.7 million in the Saaf Pani case. According to the reference, Ali & Fatima Developers, a company of Ali Imran and Rabia, illegally received the rent of the building, which was even not completed and was under-construction.

Saaf Pani Company’s former chairman Raja Qamarul Islam, a former PML-N MPA, and former chief executive officer of Saaf Paani company Waseem Ajmal are the prime suspects in the case. 

In regards to the details of the case, NAB alleged that Islam awarded contracts of 84 water filtration plants at inflated prices. The national accountability watchdog further alleges that Islam got the contracts of 102 plants approved from the company’s board of directors through forging documents.

The bureau accused Mr Ajmal of violating procurement rules and permitting the installation of the water plants in Dunyapur tehsil beyond the scope of the project.
