Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo broke the world record for goals in men’s international football when he scored his 110th and 111th goals in their 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland in the FIFA World Cup qualifying match. Ronaldo broke and extended the record two late headers. Until last night, Iran’s Ali Daei scored 109 goals between 1993 and 2006.

He has scored the most against Lithuania and Sweden – seven each. Until yesterday’s game in the Algarve, he had not scored against the Republic of Ireland.

When asked about the record, Ronaldo said, “I’m so happy, not only because I beat the record, but for the special moment that we had. Two goals at the end of the game. I have to appreciate what the team did, we believed until the end. I’m so glad.”

This record is the latest milestone to support the argument for the Portuguese to be considered an all-time great.

Ronaldo is already the top scorer in club football’s top tournament, the European Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. Former Real Madrid forward also leads the all-time scoring charts in European Championship history with 14 goals and 21 in Euros and World Cups combined.

Ronaldo finalised a fairy-tale return to Manchester United from Juventus on transfer deadline day, a club from which he rose to global stardom.
