Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed has said that former prime minister and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif is wanted in many cases and we have sought his extradition.
He told media in Islamabad on Wednesday that the government has asked the British high commissioner to deport him as courts have declared him a proclaimed offender.
The high commissioner has advised us to move an extradition petition with the British government, he continued.
Nawaz has been declared a proclaimed offender by the Islamabad High Court in the Toshakhana case. An accountability court had also declared him a proclaimed offender in a case pertaining to the land allotment.
Nawaz, who was convicted in Al-Azizia case by an accountability court, was allowed to go to London in November 2019 for medical treatment after his health deteriorated while he was in jail.
He was granted bail for two months by suspending his sentence which has been expired and not yet been extended. He has to return to serve his remaining term at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore.
It may be recalled that Nawaz Sharif’s passport was cancelled on February 16, 2021, after the government had tried all means to bring him back, but without any success. Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced that he would go to the UK himself to bring Nawaz back.
