Pakistan Democratic Movement postponed the long march indefinitely as Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has refused to endorse the demand for the mass resignations. Maulana Fazlur Rehman said the People’s Party has asked time to think on the option of mass resignation.

The former president made these remarks during a meeting of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) being held today to take stock of political situation in the wake of the shocking defeat in Senate chairman and deputy chairman elections.

According to sources, the former president said he empowered parliament through the 18th Amendment and National Finance Commission (NFC) Award. Zardari said he was ready to put up the resistance against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, but the PPP will not quit assemblies.

According to the PPP co-chairman, the issues of the mass resignations can break the PDM. “The decisions that can divide the alliance should not be taken,” he said, alluding to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) insistence on the resignations.

The former president also asked PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif to return to Pakistan and lead the fight against Imran. “Mian sahab, please come back to Pakistan,” Zardari said.

At this, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Nawaz Sharif, responded to Zardari that how could her father come back when his life is in danger. “He suffered two heart attacks in jail,” Maryam said. She also asked Zardari if he wanted to give guarantee that nothing will happen to Nawaz.

Meanwhile, the PML-N proposed that the mass resignations were necessary to make the long march an effective weapon against the government.
