The Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) have agreed to oppose the election of Yousaf Raza Gilani as opposition leader in the Senate, said sources.

The agreement was reached on Wednesday when PML-N leader and Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) Secretary General Shahid Khaqan Abbasi called on JUI-F leader Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri to inquire after the health of Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman.

Sources said they discussed the effects of Gilani’s election on the opposition alliance. Both the leaders agreed that the PPP decision harmed the PDM and a sense of despair befalls its ranks.

Abbasi said a meeting of heads of the PDM component parties should be convened to discuss the matter and chalk out a plan of action to keep the alliance intact.
