Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari announced today that the families of missing persons protesting in Islamabad have called off their 10-day strike on the assurance that Prime Minister Imran Khan will meet them in March and hear their concerns.
Shireen Mazari shared this on her Twitter account alongside a press release from the Ministry of Human Rights (MoHR).
“Conveyed the PM’s message to them and our commitment to ensure an end to this practice of Enforced Disappearances through legislation,” she said. “Process is now moving forward.”
The statement said that Dr Shireen Mazari met with the protesters today and conveyed three messages on behalf of the Prime Minister:
“One: that they end their dharna; Two: that he would meet a three-member representative committee from amongst them in March. Three: that they would hand over the list of their missing persons to Dr Mazari so that their status could be ascertained and conveyed to the PM before the meeting with the families’ representatives.”
Sammi Deen Baloch, one of the protesters in Islamabad, announced the success of the meeting with Dr Mazari on her Twitter and said that the list of missing persons has been handed to her.
“We need justice,” she said. “We hope there will be a development. We are thankful to media, civil society, [Awami Workers Party], and others for so much support.”
