Pakistan will purchase 1.2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine from Chinese pharmaceutical giant Sinopharm. The cabinet committee approved this decision on Tuesday.
“The Cabinet Committee has decided to initially purchase 1.2 million doses of the vaccine from the Chinese company Sinopharm, which will be provided free of cost to frontline workers in the first quarter of 2021,” the science minister announced on Twitter.
In the last 24 hours, 2,475 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Pakistan while 58 people lost their lives, according to the latest statistics released by the National Command and Control Centre (NCOC). The trend continued with Punjab reporting the most number of deaths in the country.
As of December 30, the total active COVID-19 cases in Pakistan stand at 34,537. Yesterday, 39,695 tests were conducted with Sindh conducting 12,940; Punjab: 15,043; Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 5,913; Islamabad: 4,433; Balochistan: 535; Gilgit-Baltistan: 371 and Azad Kashmir: 460
Out of 1756 ventilators reserved for COVID-19 patients in the country, 307 vents are currently occupied. There is no patient on the vent in AJK, GB and Balochistan.
A total of 475,085 cases have been detected so far in the country (AJK 8256, Balochistan 18148, GB 4856, ICT 37702, KPK 58379, Punjab 13666 9and Sindh 212,093).
Till now, Pakistan has recorded 10,105 deaths. Punjab is on top of the list with 4013 deaths followed by Sindh 3533, KPK: 1638; Islamabad: 416; Balochistan: 183; GB: 101 and AJK: 221.

There are 615 hospitals equipped for treating COVID-19 patients. Currently, 2,691 patients are being treated in these facilities.
