Australia on Thursday ended Pakistan’s hopes to play the Twenty20 World Cup final as Wade and Stoinis powered their team into the final against New Zealand.
Australia while chasing a target of 177 were struggling as the scoreboard showed 96-5 at one point. However, Stoinis (40) and Wade hit a much needed 81 runs to finish off the match an over early in Dubai.
Even though Pakistani fans were left heartbroken after the defeat, the general sentiment was of appreciation and gratitude for the boys in green. Fans all over social media expressed love for their players as the team had put on a great performance throughout the tournament. #greenshirts was seen trending on Twitter.
Another fan talked about the trolling targeting Hassan Ali owing to the catch he had missed during the match and showed support for the sportsman.
Pakistani Twitterati also posted edits displaying some memorable moments from the tournament, applauding the boys in green.
Prime Minister Imran Khan also took to Twitter and posted, “To Babar Azam and the team. I know exactly how all of you are feeling right now because I have faced similar disappointments on the cricket field. But you should all be proud of the quality of cricket you played and the humility you showed in your wins. Congratulations Team Australia”.
President Arif Alvi also said, “Green Shirts you played well but lost. Congratulations to Australia. A good game of cricket.”
British High Commissioner to Pakistan Christian Turner expressed support and love for the boys in green as he posted a tweet in Urdu, “Match chaahay haar gaye par dil jeet liya [Despite losing the match, you have won the heart]. Well played Pakistan Team! Looking forward to a #PakVsEng tour now.”
Captain of the team Babar Azam also posted a tweet following the team’s exit from the tournament, “Keep the head high, team. You were impressive and played like true champions. We will definitely learn from this experience and come back stronger, In sha Allah. Extremely proud of my pack.”
