The Netflix series Sex Education is in the top trend in Pakistan despite the fact that sex education is strictly forbidden in school curricula.
The series Sex Life and Dark Desire are also among the top ten in Netflix’s viewing chart which clearly hints towards Pakistanis’ fixation with consuming sexually explicit content as anything with the slightest hint of sex released on Netflix trends in Pakistan.
Earlier in the last Ramadhan, Sexify was on the top trend in the country. Similarly, there are alarming statistics of porn consumption in Pakistan which implies that suppressing the discussion about sex leads to people seeking out such information from inauthentic and harmful sources, which is more damaging. This attitude also promotes unrealistic expectations in people which, when left unfulfilled can lead to aggression and other issues.
However, Sex Education is not what Pakistanis expect it to be. Set in a rural British town where all the teens regardless of their economic or cultural backgrounds attend the same academy. Sex Education is probably the best production Netflix has ever done so far. A teenage boy with a sex therapist mother teams up with a high school classmate to set up an underground sex therapy clinic at school.
There are a lot of teen dramas and sitcoms out there, but none that present ideas in a lot intriguing way than Sex Education. The show almost intentionally plays into stereotypes for comedic effect only to flip a 180, and reveal that there is more going on than what is on the surface. A low-key masterpiece and ahead of its time.
The Comedy is also very famous around the world. The show has been praised by a number of artists, cinephiles, and movie freaks.
In a comment on the show’s IMDB page, a netizen wrote, “I am an 80-year-old retired psychologist and I am totally enchanted with each and every one of these characters. Life is messy, their lives are messy, and they find ways to deal with and cope with real situations. The acting is wonderful, the stories are wonderful, the filming is wonderful“
Another netizen said, “I am so surprised by this show! I’m a 38-year-old dude who wouldn’t even really consider watching a show like this. I just randomly clicked it because I was bored before going to bed. I typically watch documentaries and shows in the style of The Wire or Game of Thrones. Everything about this show is great! The vibrant acting, the story narrative, the gorgeous cinematography, the absolutely stunning location (Penarth, South Wales), the great characters, the relationships between characters, and Gillian Anderson! I’m also not a fan of sex being portrayed in films and tv because it’s usually cringe-worthy, but this is fun and educational. It’s like a coming-of-age film that’s really fun but deals with important and complex subjects. I don’t typically get hooked on shows but you got me Netflix! Cheers! Well done.”
