The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has decided to include Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz in an on-going probe against her husband Capt (r) Safdar for allegedly owning assets beyond known sources of income.

According to reports, the Lahore chapter of the accountability watchdog took this decision after “important leads” in the case emerged. The NAB alleged that Maryam was the beneficial owner of the multiple properties owned by Safdar in his hometown, Mansehra. It further claimed that Maryam Nawaz owned hundreds of acres of land in her name in Raiwind and other cities of Punjab.

It may be noted here that the PML-N leader and son-in-law of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is facing a NAB investigation since 2018. He is alleged to have owned 300-kanal land, 30-kanal plot, a house, a flour production unit among other properties in Mansehra. The documents suggest that details have also been sought regarding Safdar’s sources of earning.

The information regarding Safdar’s properties was received by NAB’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa office in 2020, but the cases were moved to Lahore as the majority of the said assets were found to be in Punjab’s provincial capital.
