A case in the Aabpara police station against Maulana Abdul Aziz, his associates, and seminary students under the Anti-Terrorism Act and different sections of PPC has been registered after the Taliban’s flags were found hoisted on the roof of Jamia Hafsa in G7/3 Islamabad on Saturday.
A police officer who wishes his identity to be kept concealed in his interview to a newspaper said that a case was registered against Maulana Abdul Aziz and his close associates after flags representing the Taliban were found on the rooftop of the seminary. He added that the Maulana also threatened the police with the dire consequences of their action against him using the name of the Taliban.
The police force including the anti-riot unit sent to counter the situation was challenged by the students and administrators of the seminary including Maulana Aziz with weapons. However, the situation was later resolved and no physical confrontation happened as the police officials held talks with Maulana Aziz in which the Maulana agreed to remove the flags from the rooftop, said the Police Officer.
The police officer informed that the case was registered under the directives of a senior administrative officer of the capital under section 7 of ATA and 124-A and 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code and the arms ordinance.
The deputy commissioner of Islamabad tweeted that the flags were removed, the area was cleared and an FIR had been registered.
The police officials said that hoisting of any flag is not a crime as there is no law that addresses the issue or under which legal action could be taken, adding that the cleric took advantage of the legal vacuum.
However, hoisting flags of the Afghan Taliban on the building spread terror and insecurity among the local residents, the officials argued.
