The government is announcing the first-ever National Security Policy of the country today (Monday) at a meeting in which civil and military leadership will discuss internal and external security issues.
According to Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Prime Minister Imran Khan has called a meeting of the high-powered National Security Committee which will be attended, among others, by senior military officials, including Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and Inter-Services Intelligence Director General Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum.
“It will be the first-ever National Security Policy to be approved at the meeting and later it will be made public,” Fawad wrote in his tweet posted on Sunday night.
About salient features of the policy, he said the policy would cover all internal and external security aspects, including the situation in Afghanistan and its impact on Pakistan, India, etc.
The National Security Committee will be briefed on the latest situation in Afghanistan and focus on other national security issues.
The session has been called less than a week after Pakistan hosted the extraordinary session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.
The OIC session was held in Islamabad on December 18. Envoys from 57 Islamic nations as well as observer delegations participated in the session during which it was decided to set up a Humanitarian Trust Fund and Food Security Programme to deal with the rapidly aggravating crisis.
