On Tuesday, England thumped India by 227 runs in the first Test match in Chennai. The visitors now lead the four-match series by 1-0. While chasing 420 runs to win India were bundled out for just 192 runs. Jack Leach was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors as he bagged four wickets while veteran James Anderson was miserly and picked up three.

This is England’s biggest win against India away from home. Furthermore, England has now jumped to the top of the ICC Test Championship while India has slipped from second to fourth. It is a major dent in India’s hope of qualifying for the final of the World Test Championship. India now has to win two of the next three Test at all cost.

Just like in the first innings, India’s batting collapsed. Virat Kohli the captain was the only one which offered some resistance by scoring 72 runs. Opener Shubman Gill was the second-highest run-scorer with 50.

Earlier, India resumed their innings on 39 for 1. India were hoping for a performance from Cheteshwar Pujara and Shubman Gill but Pujara went after just adding 3 runs to his overnight score. Gill played with flare and scored a half-century but was undone by James Anderson’s brilliance.

The vice captain, Ajinkya Rahane couldn’t trouble the scorers and got bowled by Anderson. The aggressive Rishabh Pant couldn’t score big. Washington Sundar also went on 0. The tail couldn’t wag as Jack Leach and Jofra Archer wrapped uo the innings quickly.

The second Test will start from February 13 at the same venue with England hoping to continue this momentum while Kohli men will be looking to bounce back from this embarrassing defeat.
