The Election of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) plea against Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Yousaf Raza Gillani, who won the Senate election against prime minister’s aide on finance Abdul Hafeez Shaikh on March 3.

The PTI had asked the election watchdog to withhold Gillani’s victory notification in the light of alleged rigging in the Senate polls.

After the decision, the ECP also issued a notification announcing Gillani’s victory.

It, however, agreed to entertain a set of petitions pertaining to a leaked video of Gillani’s son, Ali Haider Gillani, wherein he was purportedly attempting to purchase votes by advising lawmakers how to waste their ballot.

Gillani had bagged the Islamabad seat in an upset, prompting the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to move the ECP against him. The PTI had alleged that Gillani, a joint candidate of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), won the election as a result of rigging and referred to a video that went viral in the lead-up to the election.

However, the ECP rejected the PTI plea on Tuesday, asking it to file the plea again after making changes to it.

On March 2, a video of former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani’s son, Ali Haider, surfaced on social media in which he was allegedly instructing parliamentarians on how to waste their vote in the Senate polls.

On Saturday, two sitting MNAs of the ruling PTI admitted that they were in the leaked video of Ali Gilani, son of Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani in which the former is showing how to waste vote in Senate elections.
