Capitol Police officer succumbed to his injuries late Thursday he sustained when supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol building, raising the death toll to five.
Officer Brian D. Sicknick was injured on Wednesday and he collapsed when he returned to his division office, Capitol Police spokesperson Eva Malecki said.
Although he was immediately taken to hospital but pronounced dead late night.
Sicknick had been an officer in the US Capitol Police since 2008.
Amid criticisms, Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund tendered his resignations which will be effective on January 16.
On Wednesday, supporters of President Donald Trump protesting Congress’ certification of Joe Biden’s win on Nov 3 presidential election clashed with police, eventually breaching the Capitol building and making their way to the Senate floor.
