Legendary comedian Omer Sharif was laid to rest at Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s graveyard on Wednesday afternoon.

The funeral prayers were offered at Umer Sharif Park in Clifton led by Maulana Bashir Farooqi.

A large number of people arrived at the park to pay their last respects to the late comedian. Actors Afzal popularly known as Rambo, Saud, and Pak Sarzamin Party’s Mustafa Kamal attended funeral.

Omer’s body was moved to his residence in Gulshan-e-Iqbal from the Edhi morgue. It was brought back to Karachi from Istanbul in the early hours of Wednesday.

Omer’s family acquired his body following the procedures required at the cargo terminal, from where it was taken to the morgue. It was wrapped with a Pakistani flag and showered with petals.

A large number of people gathered at Omer’s residence to offer their condolences.

Omer Sharif passed away at the age of 66 on October 2, two days after he was hospitalised in Nuremberg with pneumonia on wat to the United States for medical treatment. He was suffering from cardiac complications and a kidney infection.

BIOGRAPHY: Omer Sharif was born on April 19, 1955. He started his career as a stage performer using the name Umer Zarif but later renamed to Umer Sharif.

Two of his popular comedy stage plays were Bakra Qistoon Pe and Buddha Ghar Pe Ha.

He received national awards for best director and best actor in 1992 for Mr 420. He received ten Nigar Awards and remains the only actor to receive four Nigar Awards in a single year.

He was also a recipient of the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for his contributions as a comedian, actor and producer in the entertainment industry.

The veteran actor’s medical condition had become a subject of national concern last month after he made a video appeal to Prime Minister Imran Khan to help him secure a visa to travel abroad for medical treatment.

The federal government had assured him that it would help and the Sindh government also stepped in, sanctioning Rs40 million for his treatment.
