Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Tuesday vowed to foil the sinister designs of elements trying to sabotage the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), says an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement.

General Bajwa was talking to Chinese ambassador Nong Rong who had called on him at the General Headquarters and “reiterated the resolve to thwart designs of spoilers of CPEC”, added the statement.

The statement did not specifically mention the “spoilers”, but it is obvious that he was referring to India and its collaborators in the region.

Matters of mutual interest, the developing situation in Afghanistan and regional security were discussed in detail, the ISPR said.

Ambassador Rong said China would continue to support Pakistan as a strategic partner.

He appreciated Pakistan’s sincere efforts for bringing peace and stability in the region, especially in the light of recent developments in Afghanistan.

In the past few weeks there have been two attacks on Chinese nationals in Pakistan. In the first attack on July 14, nine Chinese and three Pakistanis were killed when a suicide bomber targeted the bus carrying them. They have been working on Dasu hydropower project.

In the other attack targeting a Chinese vehicle in Gwadar on August 21, two Pakistani children lost their lives, while a Chinese citizen and a couple of other Pakistanis suffered injuries.

Pakistan has already made elaborate arrangements for security of Chinese citizens in Pakistan, especially those working on CPEC projects.
