On Monday, the Chinese Foreign Minister said that China and the United States could work in liaison to combat issues like the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change after betterment in their bilateral ties.
Wang said that China is ready to move forward and reopen constructive dialogue with the United States. In recent years, the trade war between the countries has resulted in adverse relations.
The Chinese FM is of the view that the United States should end the unnecessary restrictions and tariffs on the Chinese tech sector to create a friendly atmosphere for discussion.
Before speaking at an event organised by the foreign ministry, footage of ‘ping-pong diplomacy’ of 1972 was played which showed an exchange of table tennis players of both nations during the World Table Tennis Championship that paved the way for then U.S. President Nixon to visit China.
He also urged Washington to respect China’s internal affairs and stop meddling in Taiwan.
“Over the past few years, the United States basically cut off bilateral dialogue at all levels. We stand ready to have candid communication with the U.S. side, and engage in dialogues aimed at solving problems,” Wang said.
The FM also pointed to a recent call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden as a positive development.
However, the Biden administration has given signals that it will maintain pressure on Beijing. President Biden has raised concerns regarding unfair trade practices. Furthermore, he has also endorsed Trump’s point of view that China committed genocide in Xinjiang.
