The Board of Governors of the Pakistan Cricket Board have met via videoconference today that has led to unanimously accepting the resignation of CEO Wasim Khan, who had joined the PCB on a three-year contract in 2019.
Following the meeting, PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja said, “During his time with the PCB, Wasim Khan provided excellent leadership, particularly following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic when very little information was available and precise decision-making was required to ensure cricket remained unaffected and continued to be played at the domestic and international levels.”
The former commentator and cricketer added that the PCB owed Wasim Khan a debt of gratitude for his exemplary leadership and the PCB team wished him luck for his future endeavors.
In his statement, Wasim Khan said, “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the Pakistan Cricket Board and hugely satisfying to see the resumption of Test cricket with Sri Lanka playing Tests in Rawalpindi and Karachi, and the homecoming of the HBL Pakistan Super League during the last two years.”
Khan said, “When I arrived in 2019, there was a real need to build relationships and restore and enhance the global image and reputation of the PCB and Pakistan cricket. With decisive and strategic decision-making, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, we succeeded in earning the goodwill and respect of the global cricketing family, which I am hopeful will lead to increased international cricket being hosted in Pakistan in the future.
“With a five-year strategy in place, new domestic structure in its third season, and the investment in women’s cricket in an upward direction, I feel it is the right time to move on and reunite with my young family. They have sacrificed a lot so that I could fulfill my dreams of contributing to Pakistan cricket, which will always remain very close to my heart.”
Khan added, “I am grateful to have worked with all our fantastic commercial partners and the passionate people at the PCB. I would also like to thank each and every one of my staff for supporting me as well as the Pakistan men and women players, and the Pakistan cricket fans.”
He concluded, “Lastly, I want to wish PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja the very best during his tenure, I am sure there will be exciting times ahead for Pakistan Cricket under his leadership.”
In December 2018, Wasim Khan has joined as the managing director of the PCB. During his reign as CEO, he has been credited as one of the most influential CEO in Pakistan’s history as he brought international cricket back to Pakistan. The teams of Srilanka, Bangladesh, West Indies, and Zimbabwe visited Pakistan after a long hiatus in his 3-year tenure which has been ended in a seemingly adverse fashion.
Wasim Khan was taken on board by former chairman Ehsan Mani in 2019 to run the affairs of the board on modern lines, on a three-year contract that was set to expire in 2022.
“We have started the process of revamping the PCB and under Wasim, we now have an experienced leader of the management team who will oversee the implementation of the Board decisions. His first task would be to oversee the reforms of domestic cricket structure,” Mani had said when he had announced Wasim Khan’s appointment.
And in his first press conference as PCB chief last month, Ramiz had hinted that a complete overhaul of the system was needed in the cricket board.
Rumors of change in the PCB management had started since Ramiz’s nomination as the new PCB chief.
Pakistan’s coaches Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis were the first to go when they stepped down from their roles after the team was announced for the T20 World Cup.
