The government of Azad Kashmir has announced plans to ‘reincarnate’ the Sharda temple into the form of a university. Masood Khan, President of Azad Kashmir, revealed the government’s plans in a press conference today.

The temple, also known as the Sharada Peeth, is a ruined Hindu temple, which also served as an ancient learning centre. It stands today in Azad Kashmir, near the Neelum Valley, and was known as one of the most significant temple universities between the 6th and 12th centuries.

Azad Kashmir’s Sharda temple is almost 150 kilometers from the region’s capital, Muzaffarabad and about 130 kilometers from Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
