Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Khawaja Asif has filed a petition before the Lahore High Court (LHC) to secure bail in a case of amassing assets beyond known sources of income.

Barrister Haider Rasul Mirza filed the bail plea stating that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had arrested him from Islamabad on December 29 last year.

The counsel for Khawaja Asif contended that the petitioner has provided relevant record to the NAB, however, the bureau has not yet produced the records before the accountability court.

The counsel stated that Khawaja Asif has already given details of his assets to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), and requested the to grant him bail.

The NAB claimed that a bank peon in Lahore had deposited more than Rs28 million to the bank account of Khawaja Asif following the orders of senior officers.

The NAB also alleged that Khawaja Sultan, a nephew of Khawaja Asif, had deposited Rs20 million in his bank account on the instructions of his paternal uncle.

A political worker, Rana Abdul Waheed, had deposited Rs30 million in his account and allegedly told the NAB that Khawaja Asif gave him the money and asked him to deposit it in his bank account.

The NAB said that Khawaja Asif did not respond to the notice served on him to explain his position on such big transactions.
