The Council of Complaint of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) fined a private news channel Rs200,00 for airing fake news regarding Meesha Shafi’s court appearance.
The council concluded that “ARY News failed to report the matter in an objective and balanced manner” while failing to take into consideration the other side’s point of view before airing the story.
The story in question was related to Meesha’s appearance in court as ARY reported that the singer had visited the country to record a song but went back to Canada two days before the court hearing and failed to appear in court. Contrary to the report, Meesha’s council has represented her regularly in court, and in response to being directed the singer appeared in court on 9 December 2020.
