India set yet another grim milestone as it recorded 412,262 new coronavirus cases – the highest ever surge of cases in a single day – and the biggest toll of deaths – 3,980 – in the last 24 hours, the Health Ministry data showed on Thursday.

India has cumulative tally of 21,077,410 Covid-19 patients while the death toll rose to 230,168. The situation worsened amid a huge shortage of medical oxygen, ambulances and beds.

Meanwhile, 329,113 Covid-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals in the past day. The total recoveries stand at 1,,280,844, while there are 3,566,398 active cases in the country at present.

Maharashtra state reported 57,640 new Covid-19 cases and 920 deaths, followed by Karnataka (50,112), Kerala (41,953), Uttar Pradesh (31,165) and Delhi (20,000) in the past 24 hours.

The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (4,880,542), Kerala (1,743,932), Karnataka (1,741,046), Uttar Pradesh (1,399,348), and Tamil Nadu (1,272,602).

RLD CHIEF DIES: Meanwhile, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief and former Union minister Ajit Singh died of coronavirus on Thursday. He was 82.

Ajit Singh passed away at a hospital in Gurugram on Thursday morning battling Covid-19, his family said.

Condoling Ajit Singh’s demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was always dedicated to the welfare of farmers and that he deftly handled many responsibilities at the Centre.
