Australia defeated South Africa in a T20 cricket World Cup match by five wickets played in Abu Dhabi on Saturday after a tricky run chase.

Set a modest target of 119 runs, Australia seemed to have lost their way midway through the innings but led home by Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade with two balls to spare.

Stoinis scored 24 runs off 16 balls while Wade contributed 15 off 10 in a 40-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

Earlier, put in to bat by Australia, the South Africans were restricted to 118 for nine off their quota of 20 overs due to some accurate bowling and poor selection of shots as six batsmen could not go past 10 runs.

Aiden Markram was the top scorer was Proteas with 40, followed by Kagiso Rabada with 19, David Miller 16, Heinrich Klaasen 13 and Temba Bavuma 12.

For Australia, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa captured two scalps each.

In their run chase, kangaroos lost skipper Aaron Finch for a duck. Steven Smith was the top scorer with 35, Glenn Maxwell 18, David Warner 14 and Mitchell Marsh 11.

Australia had lost three wickets for 38 runs before Smith stabilized the innings.

Hazlewood was adjudged man of the match.
