European champions Italy have become the first national football team to go 37 games without defeat after they thrashed Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier.
After the Italians played out a goalless draw with Switzerland last Sunday, the social media and the news outlets were rife with heavily contested claims that the Azzurri had broken the record. Regardless, the Italians put the debate to rest as striker Moise Kean hit a brace to record Italy’s first win since winning the Euro 2020.
Edgaras Utkuse’s own goal and strikes from Giovanni di Lorenzo and Giacomo Raspadori sealed the win. Now, the Azzurri hold the record for the longest unbeaten run in international football. Earlier on Sunday, Brazil had disputed the claims. The Seleção claimed that they also enjoyed a 36-games unbeaten between 1993 and 1996.
The Italians silences those claims as they made their superiority count. They humiliated the Lithuanians by scoring four times inside the first 30 minutes. Since the loss against Portugal in a Nations League match on 10 September 2018, Roberto Mancini’s men are yet to lose a competitive game.
The European champions are six points clear at the top of Group C with four games remaining; however, second-placed Switzerland has two games in hand.
