Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said he only sees three alternatives for his future: prison, death, or winning next year’s presidential elections.
Meeting evangelical leaders, the President said, “I have three alternatives for my future: being arrested, killed or victory.”
He later added, “No man on Earth will threaten me,” ruling the first option out.
Bolsonaro took to criticizing Brazil’s electoral court once again. “We have a president who neither desires nor provokes a rupture, but everything has a limit in life. I can’t continue to live with this,” he said.
For weeks, Bolsonaro has questioned Brazil’s electronic voting system.
He believes that electronic ballots are vulnerable and should be replaced by printed receipts. Experts, including Brazilian judges, have rejected his claims and asserted that the methods suggested by him are more susceptible to fraud.
The head of the electoral court has said that there is no problem with the electronic voting system, and called printed receipts a “waste of focus”.
The lower house of Brazil’s Congress also voted down Bolsonaro’s efforts to alter the voting system earlier this month.
The far-right leader’s popularity has dropped after criticism of his government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, more than 579,000 people have died due to COVID-19 in Brazil. Bolsonaro is facing a Senate commission probe due to his pandemic policies.
He now trails former left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in most polls.
