President Ashraf Ghani has said that Afghans would not surrender by force and that the Taliban should stop violence and join the political process.

He was addressing a news conference in Washington on Friday after meeting with US President Joe Biden.

President Ghani emphasized the importance of the country’s military readiness to ensure security and said that it was important for the United States to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan.

He said: “There is no way to force an Afghan to surrender. We still want the Taliban to join the political process in order to reach a final political agreement to end the war.

He quoted a saying of former US president Abraham Lincoln who said “the best way to deal with the enemy is to turn him into a friend.”

President Ghani said a new chapter in Kabul-Washington cooperation has begun with the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan.
