The federal cabinet has turned down the proposal to sign a deal with Sony Entertainment under the pretext of the company being from India and that no “trade” would be done with any Indian company at a governmental level.

The decision was announced by Information Minister Fawad Chaudhary after the federal cabinet’s meeting Tuesday.

With this development, Pakistan Television Network (PTV) will not broadcast Pakistan’s upcoming tour of England which begins on July 8.

The broadcast rights to Pakistan’s games lie with Sony Entertainment after PCB entered a 3 year deal with the company in January 2021. For PTV to broadcast and go into any deal with Sony entertainment, it needed approval from the cabinet.

Prime Minister Imran Khan is also to likely visit UK next month and will watch the first One Day International which will be played between the two sides in Cardiff.

In March 2021, Pakistan’s federal cabinet had refused to ratify a decision by its Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) which sought partial resumption of the trade from India by seeking import permission for sugar and cotton.
