ISLAMABAD: Thousands of social media accounts have been blocked in the country on complaints of spreading hate speech and inciting terror.
According to the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NCTA), 19,727 social media accounts have been shut down for spreading terrorism and hate speech.
Social media accounts have been blocked by Facebook, Twitter and Google, the authority said.
According to NCTA, amongst the blocked accounts and pages on social media; 9,633 pages were spreading religious hatred, while 10,094 social media accounts were promoting terrorism.
The authority further said that five websites that spread terrorism-related material have also been blocked, with social networking websites blocking the accounts at the request of the PTA.
According to NICTA, Pakistan had registered 24,038 complaints to social media in 2020.
