The cricket fraternity, as well as people from other walks of life, have come to Moeen Ali’s defence after he was targeted by Taslima Nasreen in a widely-condemned tweet in which she wrote: “If Moeen Ali were not stuck with cricket, he would have gone to Syria to join ISIS”. After the backlash, Taslima Nasreen later deleted that post and wrote in a separate tweet that she was being “sarcastic”.
Over the weekend Moeen hit the headlines for reportedly asking Chennai Super King’s management to remove a sponsor’s logo of an alcohol company’s product from his team jersey. That was most probably the reason behind Taslima’s tweet.
England’s fast bowler and a World Cup winner called out Tasleema on his insensitive remarks and said that no one laughed at the tweet. He said, “Sarcastic? No one is laughing, not even yourself, the least you can do is delete the tweet.”
A renowned Indian journalist Barkha Dutt also appreciated the support that Moeen Ali is getting from his teammates and said, “Heartening to see the way British Cricketers have stood up for #MoeenAli after Taslima Nasreen’s hideous tweet. Wish our chaps would take a cue or two and speak their mind, not just coordinate their hashtags.”
Former England speedster was also in shock seeing the Tweet and said, “Can’t believe this. Disgusting tweet. Disgusting individual.”
Ben Duckett, England’s and Northmptomshire batsmen also lended support to his teammate Moeen Ali and said, “This is the problem with this app. People being able to say stuff like this. Disgusting. Things need to change, please report this account!”
England’s wicket keeper batsman Sam Billing asked twitterati to report Taslima’s account.
