First female announcer of Pakistan Television and renowned newscaster of Radio Pakistan, Kanwal Naseer, died on Thursday after a brief illness in Islamabad. She was 73.

Kanwal was suffering from diabetes and was admitted to a private hospital a few days ago.

Kanwal Naseer made her first announcement on the PTV on November 26, 1964. She was awarded Pride of Performance and various other national awards in recognition of her services.

She was the first first female newscaster, first female announcer of Pakistan Television and first female anchor.

Federal minister Fawad Chaudhry paid her tribute on Twitter: “The first female voice of PTV, the legendary Kanwal Naseer is no more. RIP”

Born in Lahore in 1948, Kanwal was the daughter of famous radio artist Mohini Hameed (Apa Shamim) and mother-in-law of PTI Secretary Information Ahmed Jawad.

She joined the media at the age of 17 and remained associated with PTV and Radio Pakistan for five decades.

Noted TV and film actor Humayun Saeed condoled Kanwal Naseer’s death on Twitter.

Kanwal Naseer had in an interview revealed three most important things in her life – home, school and radio.
