The Punjab Government has decided to file a case against the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), a coalition of opposition parties, for the violation of COVID-19 related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at their rallies.

Prime Minister Imran Khan also criticized PDM organizers, condemning their outright violation of coronavirus related protocols, adding that first information reports (FIRs) along with other legal action would be charged against the alliance if their forthcoming rally in Lahore was to violate SOPs.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz, while addressing a press conference earlier this week, said that the opposition had put the entire country in danger and that they were undoing Pakistan’s previous efforts to contain the virus.

“Almost the entire world has been grappling with the pandemic and even many countries have imposed curfew or complete lockdown,” he said.

“The PDM leaders claimed to be public representatives but they negated the very essence of democracy by endangering the people’s lives through public gatherings,” he added.

Senator Shibli also said that the opposition rallies had failed entirely in Multan and that the turnout was a clear indication of this failure.

“The show was a ‘complete failure’ as out of 2.5 million residents of the city, only 10,000 to 15,000 people, including 3,000 activists from Sindh, attended the gathering which means people of Multan have rejected the opposition,”.
