Following yesterday’s protests in Islamabad by government employees seeking higher salaries, the government reportedly assured a delegation of government employees of a salary increase. Sources state that a meeting between government representatives and the protesting employees concluded on a successful note.

The government was represented by Minister of Interior Sheikh Rasheed, Minister of Defence Pervez Khattak, and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan.

Reports of the meeting were confirmed by Sheikh Rasheed, who posted a series of tweets outlining the successful negotiations. He also assured that all arrested government employees will be promptly released.

On Wednesday, around 2000 government employees had gathered in D-Chowk in front of the Parliament House to protest for a raise in their salaries. The Islamabad police fired tear gas shells on the government employees, and issued baton charge. Dozens of protesters, including their leadership, were also arrested.

The government employees were protesting the income disparities between various federal government employees and demanding a 40% increase in their salaries.

Following the arrests, the government workers in the federal capital had announced they will march towards Parliament from the Islamabad Secretariat for their demands and the release of their leaders.
