America’s newly elected President, Joe Biden, plans to reverse Donald Trump’s ban on various Muslim majority countries.
“Muslim communities are the first to feel Donald Trump’s assault on Black and brown communities in this country, with his vile Muslim ban. That fight was the opening barrage in what has been nearly four years of constant pressure and insults,” Biden had previously said.
Nihad Awad, national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said, “President-elect Biden has pledged to end the Muslim Ban on his first day in office, include Muslims at every level of his administration and address issues of racial and religious discrimination.”
“We plan to join other American Muslim leaders and organisations in ensuring that the Biden administration fulfills these promises. We also plan to continue holding our government accountable when it errs.” he added.
This reversal will be part of the four executive orders Biden intends to issue on his first presidency.
Trump’s Muslim ban—an executive order banning travel from several mostly Muslim countries- only continued to expand under the Trump administration, with six more countries in Africa and Asia being directly affected by it in early 2020.
Months before he was elected, Biden vowed to push politicians for laws to curb the sharp rise in the number of hate crimes in the US.
