The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) is gearing towards its third anti-government rally in Quetta today, amid increased security measures.
The 11-party opposition alliance is all set to hold its power show at the Ayub Khan stadium in Quetta, where Nawaz Sharif will address the crowd via a video call from London. Two hundred chairs have been set up in the stadium for participants.
Previously, however, The National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) reported of possible terrorist activities, especially against political leaders, by the Tehreek-e-Taliban. The Balochistan government has decided to impose Section-144 in the city: a ban on publicly bearing arms or weapons.
Over 4,000 security personnel are on duty for the rally.
On Friday, Balochistan government spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani appealed to the PDM leadership to defer their rally on account of a potential terrorist attack. They, however, disregarded the warnings, stating that the rally would be held in any case. Regarding potential threats, President PDM Maulana Fazlur Rehman has previously stated: “It is the responsibility of the government to provide security for the Quetta gathering. If they cannot provide security, they should go home.”
President PDM Maulana Fazlur Rehman, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, ANP leader Asfand Yar Wali, Mahmood Khan Achakzai and other leaders will address the rally while PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari could possibly resort to an address via video link on account of him being in Gilgit.
