The Supreme Court has directed all accountability courts to expedite trials of corruption related cases.
On Wednesday, a three-judge special bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan, Gulzar Ahmed, enforced a one month deadline for the speedy disposal of pending graft cases and to ensure that witness produced evidence is recorded as early as possible.
According to Additional Attorney General Sohail Mehmood, Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Khalid Javed Khan had a meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday regarding the discussion of different under-trial cases before the superior courts in addition to the establishment of 120 accountability courts.
“Currently 24 accountability courts are fully operational across the country. The judges have been appointed to vacant positions and there are no vacant seats in the NAB courts now,” he said.
The Ministry of Law, on 3 September, laid out an extensive plan built around ensuring a speedy dispensation of justice and following the Supreme Court’s order regarding the establishment of 120 accountability courts.
“The federal government has been vigorously focusing to expedite the process of accountability across the board, for which these additional accountability courts would be established,” the ministry had said.
